HMRC bill payment instructions
Modified HMRC bill payment instructions:
Dear Taxpayer,
We would like to inform you about the various payment methods available for settling your HMRC bill. We recommend the following options:
- Phone or Internet Banking: This is the most efficient method if you are already set up for the service. Making a Faster Payment will ensure same-day processing.
- Over the Phone using Debit Card: Call 0300 200 3814 to make your payment. Please allow 3 working days for processing.
- Online Debit Card Payment: Visit www.gov.uk/pay-tax-debit-credit-card to pay online. Please allow 3 working days for processing.
Payment reference - Including an extra 4 digits:
To ensure your payment is allocated correctly, you will need to provide your Accounts Office Reference. This reference can be found in the top right-hand corner of your HMRC Remittance Report. It consists of 3 numbers followed by a āPā and another letter, ending with 8 numbers. Always quote your Accounts Office reference number when making a payment.
Additionally, some screens may ask for an extra 4 digits at the end of the reference to allocate the payment to the correct tax period. The first 2 digits represent the tax year (end), and the last two represent the tax month. For instance, if the quarterly bill is due between 6.4.23 and 22.4.23, covering the period Jan, Feb & Mar (up to month 12), the code will be 2312. If you are unsure which code to use, don't hesitate to contact the Payroll Team for assistance.
Payment type:
You are paying Employer's PAYE & NIC to Cumbernauld. When using internet banking, identifying the correct option might be challenging. In case of any difficulties, simply call us and let us know your on-screen choices. Different banks may have varying options, especially Barclays customers. The account you should pay to is 08-32-10, 12001039.
Please keep a record of each transfer (date and amount) in case HMRC claims they haven't received your payment and a trace is required.
Paying early or late:
Always try to avoid paying early or late. HMRC's systems are automated and won't recognize that you are an employer. They will initiate debt collection measures if they cannot find your payment within the specified period, treating you as a business.
However, if circumstances force you to pay late, you can direct your payment to the correct place by adding those extra 4 digits to the end of your Accounts Office Reference.
Thank you for your attention to these instructions. If you have any queries, don't hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely, HMRC payment team
